Long ago when the angels and demons first came to Ira, they refused to side with either party and instead were asked by humans to help the resistance. As a result they were driven back in to their mountainous cities to wait patiently for the humans to "deal with their bloody pest control".
After the war, around the same time the elves began their great evolution, the dwarves began to emerge from their mountains and in a resurgence of pride and honor, began to restore much of the lore erased by the Angels and Demons, as well as explore the world to see how it had changed.
During this expedition, many dwarves were attacked by the enterprising High Elves. The bloody war raged until the humans, in a stroke of uncharacteristic peacefulness after a prolonged war, helped broker an uneasy peace between the races.
While the Dwarves and High Elves are not at war, the dwarves definitely feel no love for the "damned dirty dagger ears".
Dwarves are one of the smaller races in the world of Ira. This is not just in their size but in their numbers as well. There is only one major Dwarven city, Gloreft, which in Dwarven means glowing fortress. This is a reference to the seeming never ending amount of ore in the tunnels running below the Dwarven capital.
The Dwarven society is heavily wound up in clan honor. This honor is earned by individual skill such as being an exceptional smith, or during times of war and in combat. At the age of 15 each Dwarven male is drafted conscripted into mandatory military service. This is done for a number of reasons, chief among them being that the Dwarves are surrounded on all sides by enemies. Each Dwarven male starts his service in the regular forces where he is trained and after 5 years of brutal training, is assigned to any number of positions. The Deep Warriors are one of the most prestigious and highly sought after posts in the city. Their job is simple, venture into the tunnels beneath and around the city clearing them of some of the threats that linger just outside the Dwarven doors. After a number of years in the service each Dwarf is given the choice to continue service or return home and do as they please. It is at this point that many of the Dwarfs take up their crafting skills, chief among them is blacksmithing. One of the most lucrative exports of Gloreft comes from their superior armor and weapons, which are sold throughout the world, predominately to humans.
Overall Gloreft is a wealthy city of both great Militant strength and money. A powerhouse in the north the Dwarves generally keep out of the affairs of the other races, preferring to keep to themselves and their work.
There are a number of other Dwarven settlements that dot the landscape, some small some larger but never numbering more than a few hundred.
